Analytical Spectroscopy in Perspective
The list below gives examples of ways to detect an analyte. As you can see spectroscopy is one of a limited number of general categories of detection methods.
Physical methods tend to be very general but are not as sensitive as instrumental methods that use spectroscopy or charge detection. Keep in mind that there are a large multitude of specific analytical techniques in each of these categories.
- Physical properties
- refractive index
- thermal conductivity
- With electromagnetic radiation (Spectroscopy)
- By an electric charge (current)
- mass spectrometry
Please read the following review documents with which you are not familiar.
The following documents are not required for the course but are available here to provide a qualitative description of the interaction of light with matter.
