Catalysts: Nanopipe dream
Porous carbons capable of supporting well dispersed platinum nanoparticles are in high demand as a means of improving traditional platinum catalysts, and also to meet the high-current output required in advanced fuel cell systems. A new strategy developed by a collaboration between labs from Korea and Japan produces ordered arrays of uniform carbon 'nanopipes' with tunable diameters. The nanostructured carbon material forms as a partially ordered graphitic framework using mesoporous silica templates and it already achieves promising electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction.
